ANELLO Photonics is a leading-edge technology company based in Santa Clara, CA. The company has developed the ANELLO SiPhOG™ – Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope. The technology is based on integrated silicon photonics. The ANELLO SiPhOG allows for robust and accurate navigation in GPS-denied or contested environments.
Interview with Gerhard Boiciuc, VP Business Development and Partnerships at ANELLO Photonics.
Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?
Gerhard Boiciuc: ANELLO Photonics is currently engaged with various market-leading customers across a vast area of applications including Construction, Agriculture, Robotics, Drones, Trucking, Autonomous Vehicles, and Defense space.
E.E: What’s the news about new products/services?
G.B: We successfully released the ANELLO X3 at CES 2024. The ANELLO X3 is the world’s smallest and lightest full 3-Axis, high performance optical gyroscope Inertial Measurement Unit.
The ANELLO X3 incorporates three state-of-the-art ANELLO SiPhOGTM (Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope) units as low-noise and low-drift optical smart sensors each containing its own independent 6-Axis redundant IMU sensor. The ANELLO X3 represents a dramatic leap in technology and size, weight and power (SWaP) from existing products out in the market.
E.E: What are the ranges of products/services?
G.B: With ANELLO, customers get access to a complete portfolio of products consisting of robust and reliable optical gyroscope-based Inertial Measurement Units (IMU) or Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) for use in applications that cover land, air and sea. E.E: What is the state of the market where you are currently active?
G.B: ANELLO is actively engaged with market leaders in Construction, Agriculture, Robotics, Trucking, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Autonomous Vehicles, and Defense. The inertial sensing market has been experiencing significant growth due to increasing demand for robust and reliable navigation and positioning for various autonomous applications that can operate in GPS-denied or contested environments. The current geopolitical situation together with the recent GPS outages caused by the recent Solar Storm have resulted in an increased demand in ANELLO products and solutions that allow for operation in GPS-denied or contested environments. This demand will only continue to increase globally and ANELLO is perfectly positioned to deliver compelling solutions to our customers.
E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?
G.B: We believe that the demand for robust and accurate navigation will continue to increase over the next 24 months as autonomy becomes more prevalent across the globe. Because of this, we anticipate an increased demand for our innovative optical gyroscope-based products and solutions such as the ANELLO GNSS INS or the ANELLO IMU+ and the X3. Long term we expect to see a significant increase in demand for our core SiPhOGTM technology and this will be driven by large volume applications such as autonomous vehicles which require accurate vehicle motion tracking and positioning. In aerospace and defense, our ANELLO technology is poised to become a critical component in navigation systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), land-based vehicles as well as Maritime Unmanned vehicles (USV and UUAVs) that all need to operate in GPS-denied or contested environments.
E.E: What are the most innovative products/services marketed?
G.B: ANELLO is the creator of the SiPhOGTM – Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope. This is the world’s smallest high-performing optical gyroscope on a chip and represents the first new gyroscope developed in over 20 years. Earlier this year SPIE – The International Society for Optics and Photonics – recognized the ANELLO SiPhOG as most innovative new optics and photonics product in the category Autonomy, making it the winner of the PRISM Award. The ANELLO SiPhOG technology sits at the core of all systems that ANELLO is developing and when the SiPhOG is combined with a CPU and AI algorithms it then allows for robust solutions that enable navigation without GPS for extended periods of time.
E.E: What estimations do you have for 2024?
G.B: We anticipate an increase in demand around reliable and robust inertial technology and solutions operating in GPS-denied or contested environments. This increase will come from both Commercial/Industrial and Defense customers across the globe. We are confident that with our currently available products and solutions, as well as with our future roadmap, ANELLO is perfectly positioned to provide solutions to our customers for many years to come.
