Interview with Niels Nielsen,V.P. Commercial Director of Resino.

Easy Engineering: Which are the fields of activity where you are operating?

Niels Nielsen: We are very engaged in the market of inks and varnishes exposed to direct food contact. We offer inks that are suitable for direct and in-direct food contact and can be used for informative and/or decorative purposes. See our selection of inks and varnishes for direct food contact materials here.

We also deliver printing ink for non-woven diapers and other hygiene products. We offer both solvent-based and water-based 1k and 2k inks. Printing on hygiene materials is a delicate process, where it is necessary to balance physical performance and regulatory demands.

We are proud of our global leading position in inks for meat casings, and we enable our customers to perform high quality fine print decoration on all types of meat casings. We offer 2k water-based and solvent-based systems, plus UV curing inks. Our inks for meat casings have great adhesion, low migration risk as well as boiling and sterilization resistance. Discover more about our inks for meat casings here.

We also offer tailored solutions for ink systems for flexo print. Feel free to contact us if you need ink for a special application.

Resino operates in markets with strict regulations and thus, regulatory compliance is key to us. To assure credibility of our information, we work with third party institutes which validate the data to always ensure that regulatory standards are met.

E.E: Which are the most significant projects from 2021?

N.N: We needed to develop a varnish that could replace the plastic coating on disposable tableware. Read more below.

E.E: What projects were the most challenging? What are the usual challenges you encounter?

N.N: In 2021, a new legislation came into force within the EU, which banned the use of plastic for disposable tableware (European Union’s Single-Use Plastics Directive). Therefore, we needed to find solutions, as we have many customers offering disposable tableware with a plastic coating. Plastic has protective features, which does not appear in paper and board packaging. Plastic is a great barrier, protecting food and prolonging the shelf-life of the food. At the same time plastic is only rarely attacked by the food content. Moreover, plastic can act as a barrier allowing printing on the outside safely. Thus, eliminating plastic calls for an alternative barrier to take on this protective function.

E.E: How did you overcome the challenges?

N.N: In close cooperation with customers, we have developed varnishes, based on acrylic binders as well as natural materials, which can replace the plastic coating. The varnishes of natural materials present an important milestone within Resino as they are also compostable.

E.E: What products / solutions were used in the projects?

N.N: The developed varnishes as mentioned above.

In relation to this, we have also developed colored inks based on the same foundation.

E.E: Why did the clients choose your products / solutions?

N.N: With our product, our customer was able to create a solution that was SUPD exempt.

E.E: How were these products/solutions used to optimize the client’s business?

N.N: The varnishes and inks developed in relation to the EU Directive are highly innovative since they support our customers’ goal to convert from plastic to paper and board products. Furthermore, our varnishes of natural materials fulfill our customers’ needs to be more environmentally friendly, as these varnishes are compostable.

E.E: What innovative features do the products / solutions have?

N.N: The varnishes can replace the plastic coating both on disposable tableware and food packaging. These varnishes can prevent the packaging from being attacked by moisture, grease of other components from the food content. Read more about our varnishes in this article.

Another innovative feature of the varnishes of natural materials and inks based on food ingredients is the fact that they are compostable.

E.E: What are your forecasts for 2022?

N.N: Consumer safety and regulatory compliances are forever tightening, and we expect this to continue. It is important for us to stay at the forefront of this, and these issues will remain a high priority in our development work.

Sustainability is also an issue we must continuously consider in our product developments, both in the form of renewable resources and biodegradability. Furthermore, Resino is active in a “Circular monoplast” project to improve recyclability of plastics.

Resino is excited to further challenge the world by expanding our global presence where new partnerships enter the scene. Therefore, we are looking for distributors in the segments: food contact materials, hygiene non-woven, in-mould labels, lidding films, lami-tubes and specialty packaging.

If your company already offers complementary products or has contacts in these segments, then being a part of Resino’s global network of distributors could be very interesting to you.

Resino is always striving towards a joint success with the mutual goal to improve life for the future joint customers. Resino values a close partnership with customers and distributors built on trust and dedication where the key is based on clear and honest communication. Therefore, the new distributors can expect a close partnership as if your company is an integrated part of Resino.
