INTERVIEW WITH ASOBI

Asobi is a design studio that develops the brand Tokio. that envisioned a timeless collection of furniture and lighting products. What would be modern and significant now, but also 100 years from now? Therefore, they took the minimalistic approach in design and used only the best materials and technology.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Asobi: We specialize in product design that focuses on high-tech lighting and modern furniture. That’s why the name Tokio. – timeless Japanese art and craftsmanship merged with the best technology.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

Asobi: The latest addition to Tokio. is the Uebu system – a modular chandelier that can illuminate small intimate spaces or vast open places like reception lobbies of hotels, and everything in between. Its emphasis on glass highlights the natural beauty and versatility of this timeless material … The LED inside is low voltage, because we know these types of lamps are usually on all the time. This way companies can keep their sustainability promises.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

Asobi: Tokio. consists of 7 product lines by now: 3 different kinds of pendant lamps, a floor lamp system, a dining table, a bookshelf and an award-winning sofa. What is most compelling is the fact that we make all of that by hand and dedicated to each client individually, due to many options and customizations. It was all designed and developed inhouse and it is all made in Slovenia. We mostly use carbon fiber as the main material as it is strong, durable and willing to be put in any shape necessary.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

Asobi: We are currently active in the higher end of the market that recognizes bespoke and special design, stepping away from mass-produced trend products. It’s niche and specific, but for us much sexier than the alternative …

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

Asobi: As we see it, trends go towards modern, simplistic and smart designs, not forgetting the ecological footprint, of course. Sustainability is a big factor, as we all want to build our homes for longer terms, not just a few years, and with as much renewable energy as possible. Therefore, Tokio. thinks of longevity and timelessness of the design – not just esthetically but also technologically.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

Asobi: We’d say most innovative are the Uebu chandelier system and the Carbon Light fixtures as they bring so much versatility, performance and style. There are infinite possibilities and they deliver the results, the solutions; either in minimal energy, creating atmosphere, adjustability or simply covering ground. It’s everything you’d ever need.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2023?

Asobi: This year is very significant to us, as we are approaching pre-Covid times. We are again attending the big events like the Euroluce in Milan, whereas also opening a showroom in Tokyo – a huge steppingstone for us. Already we are present in China, India, Singapore, Italy, Germany, France and the USA – but Tokio. being in Tokyo means the cherry on the cake.
