INTERVIEW WITH BIKETEC

Biketec is a spin-off of the Swiss e-bike pioneer FLYER and acts on the market as an independent company since July 1, 2020 and is a bundling of competencies relating to fit for simple and customized e-bike system integration. The company has many years of experience and extensive know-how in the integration and development of e-bike components. FIT is available in the market since 2015.

Open bus system and plug-and-play components with comprehensive all-round service.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

BIKETEC: Biketec integrates with FIT components from the best manufacturers. We integrate the components into a complete system for a smart and intuitive operation of the e-bike for all users, such as OEM, retailers and consumers.

Our partners include motor brands such as Brose and Panasonic. In addition, we work together with manufacturers such as Abus, Rohloff, Enviolo, BMZ, Trendpower and many more.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

BIKETEC: With FIT 2.0 we have developed a system that offers a wide range of possibilities. Our specialist dealers work with a cloud-based tool that works for all e-bikes with FIT 2.0, independently from bike or motor brand. The e-bike can also be expanded after sales, with our FIT E-Bike Control app and its functions, or upgrades can be made to the motor and charger. Additional components, such as the electronic frame lock – which has been awarded at the Eurobike Show 2021  – or tire pressure sensors, can be integrated into the app. Further functions will follow.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

BIKETEC: We offer a wide range of products from pure system integration, to batteries, displays, control elements, accessories and digital products such as the app or service tools for retailers and OEMs.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

BIKETEC: Market for e-bike systems is quite mature and dominated by Bosch. Our approach to create at least design wise more individual systems by combining different motors and batteries to a single “FIT system” sharing the same communication protocol follows more the automotive manufacturer approach and is quite unique when applied to the e-bike market.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

BIKETEC: We observe that e-bikes continue to conquer almost all segments like cargo bikes, low weight clean urban bikes and even kids bikes. Depending on the bike segments new requirements for the e-bike system itself arise. For example, “clean urban bikes” require smaller and integrated displays and nice compact batteries. In this class of e-bikes in addition, the e-bike is becoming more connected and individually configurable. On the contrary we see demands for longer ranges in cargo bikes as well as in speed pedelecs. This leads to several range extender solutions. More comfort and safety is still to come which leads to more demand for automatic gear systems and brakes equipped with ABS.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

BIKETEC: FIT-system includes a bunch of security features managing the access rights to the e-bike. User can use the FIT e-bike control app as a digital key or we even offer a physical BLE based key. Both solutions can be combined with an electric frame lock, both opening and locking the e-bike upon request. New feature in the e-bike market is so called “invite function”. This nice feature gives the access right of your e-bike to your invited friends for a certain period of time.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2022?

BIKETEC: We expect to see an improvement along the complete supply chain. In particular concerning the semiconductor crisis. Depending on the recovery and stability of the supply chain we expect a double digit increase in sales on the European market.
