INTERVIEW WITH BUCK

BUCK company was founded in 1992 and is engaged in producing LED lighting of the original design. Lighting is a field that has limitless possibilities and creates space for creative upgrades, so it was a logical choice, after completing electrical education, to start a business like this. They brought together a team with a concrete vision. The company has developed step by step to provide the market with something new, innovative and original, but in the spirit of the market’s requirements.

Since its inception, the company has focused on producing high-quality luminaires. As a result, quality has been a priority in business. BUCK’s vision is to contribute to the quality of lighting and its positive impact on people and the environment. LED lighting that they produce enables significant energy savings, is recyclable and is manufactured following current environmental recommendations. What distinguishes BUCK’s products, and what they are especially proud of, is the original design for which they have received several international awards.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

BUCK: The BUCK team does not sell luminaires only but offers lighting solutions. When designing the luminaires, the starting point is client’s needs. Then, a large number of other aspects are taken into account – sustainable design, optical accessories that increase energy efficiency, long service life, recyclability, ergonomic design, interior fit, accurate response to architects’ needs. Finally, the application of luminaire in space, according to aesthetics and maneuvers of space, needs to be coordinated. As a result, we have a satisfied client who received lighting according to its needs. Our lighting includes architectural, medical, industrial, sports, street and outdoor LED lighting. Depending on the needs of the market, different types of lighting gain in importance at different times. We are constantly working on product development, market research and marketing, and we believe that synchronized work in these three fields is the key to success and business development.

E.E: What’s the news for 2021 about new products?

BUCK: Our collaboration with the Barthambach Development Center is definitely something we would single out. Our luminaires that use Bartembach optics are actually already existing products that we have further improved. We completed the product families that had standard optics with the Bartembach ones. In that way, we innovated them, expanded their field of use, and visually gave some new features. System S is an example of an improved system product that can solve the lighting of complete interiors, business premises, and different purposes with one family of products. Different needs for lighting in the space can now be achieved with one system approach. We continue to develop new products with Bartembach, so we are in constant cooperation with them and follow the trends in the optics they develop.

A modern solution for people who spend most of the day under artificial lighting is human-centric lighting, which fully encompasses the positive effects of light on humans. Thanks to new knowledge about the biological effects of light and innovations in lighting technology, high-quality LED luminaires that we make have the ability to adjust the intensity and color of the emitted light, thus achieving positive effects on the human body.

Tunnel lighting is a completely new branch of lighting application that we have now opened. They are a specific segment of the infrastructure, extremely demanding and challenging for all of us at BUCK. The Asfinag tunnel in Austria is one of the projects of this type that we are especially proud of.

Sports lighting is the branch of lighting in which we have recognized the great potential. VECTOR luminaire family is a specially designed family of products from our offer that fully meet sports lighting requirements both indoors and outdoors. We can boast with notable projects in stadiums and sports fields, and in the future, we expect further development of this field.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

BUCK: Having in mind general situation, we can single out hospitals that are the most current in architecture and the pharmaceutical industry. Suitable products are HCL luminaires and cleanroom lighting. That is what occupies us the most at the moment.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

BUCK: The economic crisis, like any other crisis, opens up space for a company to realize how flexible and strong it is. If you are smart and able to assess the situation, even external shocks cannot destabilize you. The great advantage of our company is that it does not operate in one market. The coronavirus has certainly affected the entire planet, and the consequences can be seen from two angles. On the one hand, communication and customer relations, closed borders, trade fairs and direct business deals and product presentations are difficult. All this distances companies from clients and requires the investment of additional resources in overcoming such obstacles. On the other hand, the market for medical and clean room lighting has expanded. The pharmaceutical industry, laboratories and hospitals are business hotspots. The market of the pharmaceutical industry, and here we primarily mean the production of vaccines, is the one where we fit in best with our cleanroom products. The exponential growth of markets is most visible in this segment as well as in hospitals.

The potential of Serbia is not reduced to cheap labor that will assemble some parts, but it also has qualified experts, and it is very profitable to transfer development here. We are a concrete example that there are no markets and situations that cannot be accessed and adjusted. It is a question of good timing and expertise, especially in years like the previous one.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

BUCK: The pandemic is slowly but surely losing ground. Our expectations and forecasts are that after the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, all markets will experience a sharp increase within one year because a large amount of money went into investments and was pumped into the systems. A large amount of money from governments will eventually end up in construction. We expect the prosperity of the construction industry and complementary industries, especially. We expect the largest investments in hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry and infrastructure. Almost 70-80% of state money is expected to end up in infrastructure.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

BUCK: ARIA HCL as a stand-alone luminaire is the first to be completely designed by HCL concept. In our range, we also have SYSTEM S products that are HCL ready, which means that they are equipped to be used in systems designed according to the HCL concept, with the appropriate type of control.

Media facades are a project we are starting to work on very intensively. It’s something we haven’t dealt with so far, and it gives us great opportunities.

We would also like to emphasize products that use the already mentioned Bartembach optics and whose optical design perfectly matches complex surfaces, highly reflective surfaces, and micro facets. They do light physics in the most modern way based on models, calculations and experimental tests. They define high-quality optics. It is possible to look at our luminaire without any glare. We are connected to their development sector, which makes components, and we use them as optical elements and incorporate them into our products. In addition to energy efficiency, optics, more precisely the quality of light, is crucial.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2021?

BUCK: We expect a year of recovery, but we are not the only ones expecting it. All the players on the market are preparing themselves and looking forward to it. This year should mark the beginning of a growing cycle of the next three to five years. The amount of money put into the systems must materialize at some point, and real estate is a suitable way, so we expect a multitude of projects, both smaller and larger. In addition to construction projects, predictions are that part of the money invested in the system will go to the stock market in new technologies. We can already see that the architectural and design bureaus are overwhelmed with work, confirming that our predictions are correct.
