BurntWood consists of a group of tenacious enthusiasts who want to help find new sustainable solutions for the construction sector. The company has a shared ambition to be able to provide modern, unconventional responses to today’s requirements for sustainable construction. BurntWood believes that low-tech solutions can have high-tech qualities that can help make the world more sustainable.

Their products are based on a sustainable impregnation method, which is actually “burning” the wood. When the upper millimeters of the tree are charred, the sugars in the tree are burned at the same time so that the harmful microorganisms have nothing to live on. No chemical substances are used for impregnation, as it is the wood’s own substances that, through the burning, protect the surface – a surface that is both beautiful and extremely weather resistant.

BurntWood has a life expectancy of up to 50 years, but in practice specimens of burnt oak posts dating back to the Viking Age have been found. The burnt surface gives both the wood a beautiful appearance and a long service life.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

BurntWood: The primary activities in BurntWood are production and selling of our sustainable products BurntWood and ReWood. Through this we are also cooperation with municipalities by engaging young people experiencing certain difficulties by letting them be part of our production line of our ReWood elements. Municipalities are also incorporated in the ReWood process by suppling the recycled wood we use to build ReWood elements.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

BurntWood: The new thing about our products in particularly is the way we impregnate the wood by burning it. It makes the products maintenance free and together with the life expectancy of 50 years, makes our products not only sustainable but also a very easy material to use and maintain.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

BurntWood: In our productline we have both BurntWood and ReWood. The difference being ReWood coming from recycled wood, that has already been thrown out.

In 2022 we will focus more on scaling our ReWood facade elements, as we are experiencing increased demand for this completely sustainable product. We make these BurntWood façade elements from recycled wood and that is what we call ReWood. We love being able to turn something that is about to be thrown out into a beautiful product that can go straight into the construction industry.

Some facts about the use of ReWood:

  • Maintenance-free façade
  • Recycled wood = CO2 plus storage 20kg/m2
  • Planted wood per square metre sold = plus-plus in CO2 Accounts
  • Non-toxic waterproofing
  • Modern look
  • CSR jobs
  • Fast mounting
  • From the local recycling, for example, the local school

The fact that our elements after the “burning” treatment has a life expectancy for up to 50 years and is maintenance-free makes it a no brainer decision for many people when choosing between BurntWood and substituting products.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

BurntWood: BurntWood and ReWood has already been used in many big construction projects and we are we are striving to continue our growth with especially ReWood to contribute to a more much more sustainable way of building in the future.

We are currently located in Denmark, which is where we are mostly known and therefore used. However, we are hoping that people across the Danish boarder, will get to know out products soon.

To give you an idea of how BurntWood looks when being used, here is a few pictures from a project the Danish Architect Bjarke Ingels made at the Harbour in Aarhus Denmark:

This is also what we experience in the construction industry, people are demanding sustainable solutions anywhere possible. These market trends are obviously very nice to see from our perspective as being sustainable is the main idea behind BurntWood.

Our goal in this market is to contribute and giving people another sustainable option when it comes to all kinds of construction projects.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2022?

BurntWood: Our expectations for 2022 is continues focus on sustainability in the market, where we will contribute as much as possible. We are also expecting 2022 to bring even more partners for ReWood in terms of municipalities that contribute with discarded wood.
