CLEANSPACE RESPIRATORS: A REVOLUTION IN RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

CleanSpace Technology, an Australian company based in Sydney, assists in product training, fit testing and instructions on maintenance and care with attentive customer support. The company, established in 2009 by a world class medical device engineering team, is a specialist in next generation respiratory protection. CleanSpace Respirators are seen as a revolution in the area of respiratory protection because while they provide all the protection of a PAPR, they are free from belts, battery packs and hoses making them more comfortable and easier to deploy. CleanSpace Respirators are the lightest and smallest powered respirators in the world which provide the highest protection, comfort and cost-effective respiratory protection solutions.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: CleanSpace Technology has designed a range of respirators for the industrial sector such as mining, construction and wastewater, as well as the healthcare, pharmaceutical and laboratory sectors. CleanSpace Technology, an Australian company that designs and manufactures next-generation respirators, has found itself at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proprietary technology at the heart of all CleanSpace Respirators was designed by ex-ResMed biomedical engineers, ResMed is a world leader in CPAP devices. The engineers had a vision to make respirators which deliver high-level protection in a comfortable, easy-to-use system. The company has been successfully protecting workers in a wide range of sectors for the past ten years.

E.E: What’s the news for 2020 about new products?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the global challenges for the supply of disposable N95 masks and the wide spread issues for poorly fitted and uncomfortable masks. The issue of comfort has been illustrated as seen in reports of staff complaining of moisture on the face, heat stress, deep marks on their face at the end of a shift and fogging of eyewear.

CleanSpace Respirators are next generation PAPRs (Powered Air Purifying Respirators). They offer a high level of protection, provide cool, fresh air on the face, prevent fogging of eye wear and have a clear transparent mask that allows for easy communication. All these benefits of comfort and safety means a higher level of compliance.

E.E: What are the ranges of traded products?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: CleanSpace Respirators are available in four models, depending on the requirements of the industry:

  • CleanSpace EX is intrinsically safe so that it can be worn in potentially explosive environments such as mining;
  • CleanSpace Ultra is IP rated 66 making it water tolerant, perfect for stonemasons carrying out wet-cutting;
  • CleanSpace 2 can be used in a variety of industrial applications where water tolerance or intrinsic safety is not required;
  • CleanSpace HALO is designed specifically for the healthcare, pharmaceutical and laboratory sectors.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: CleanSpace is currently sold in more than 35 countries. We have been supplying respirators for more than 10 years to those on the frontline in many industrial markets such as mining, construction and welding. In the last couple of years, we have developed the market for CleanSpace HALO which is specifically designed for the healthcare sector.

Until CleanSpace, the technology for masks had not changed in 30 years. Traditional devices were typically uncomfortable, hot and provided low levels of protection. Industries such as mining, metal works and stonemasonry, where workers are exposed to harmful contaminates such as coal dust, silica and welding fumes, welcomed an alternative.

Compared to disposable masks, CleanSpace Respirators offer more protection and are more economical as the cost of replacing disposables stacks up. With the current COVID-19 crisis, securing a reliable supply has also been an issue. Disposable masks are well-known for causing fogging of eyewear and discomfort, leading to low compliance. When used in hot or humid conditions, CleanSpace Respirators provide cool, clean air to the user and eliminate fogging and moisture.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: Regardless of the market or the geography, frontline workers in industry and healthcare all have the desire to protect themselves for harmful airborne contaminants. As people become more aware of the health dangers they face in various industries, and as many guidelines are tightened, we see a gradual improvement in workplace health and safety and the required PPE. Obviously, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we have had a surge in supply to frontline healthcare workers who are at a greater risk of contracting the virus. The pandemic has highlighted the shortfalls of disposable respirators.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

CLEANSPACE TECHNOLOGY: CleanSpace Respirators are light, easy to put on, reliably safe and comfortable. These smart powered devices are easily operated using a one-button smart system. These unique features mean more workers wear these respirators for a full shift every time.

CleanSpace Respirators are CE, NIOSH and AS/NZS 1716 approved. CleanSpace Respirators meet and exceed standards with a P3/TM3 99.95% HEPA filter efficiency for particles 0.3microns and above. CleanSpace offers both half face and full-face masks with assigned protection factor of 50 and 1000. The full-face mask also has a high impact rating. CleanSpace Respirators are compact systems that have up to eight hours run time and fast top up charging.

“Our technology was seen as a game-changer and it still is. One of the main reasons people go unprotected is because of low compliance. If masks are uncomfortable or not quick and easy to put on then it simply doesn’t get used.” says CleanSpace Technology CEO Dr Alex Birrell. “CleanSpace is unique: it’s a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) without the heavy and cumbersome belt and hoses associated with PAPRs. Its simplicity, with fresh air on the face, makes it far preferable to the N95 disposable.”
