Interview with Gianmichele Foglia, Commercial Director at Metalleghe.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Gianmichele Foglia: Metalleghe was founded in 1980 based on the intuition of the entrepreneur Guido Dusi (today President of Metalleghe Group). After a debut dedicated to the trading business, in 1982 the company moved to the current plant in Flero (BS) and started working iron alloys and carbons and giving space to its natural industrial vocation. Its continuous and constant growth led it to be leader in this field, addressed to the steel mills and cast iron foundries. Today Metalleghe S.p.A. is the parent company of Metalleghe Group.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

G.F: Our mission is to provide a complete service and to continue to guarantee maximum punctuality and precision in deliveries to more and more customers in Italy as well as around the world. To achieve this result, we have initiated an ambitious process of development in terms of volumes and markets, investing in new warehouses and commercial and distribution centers throughout the Mediterranean area. The new warehouses are positioned in highly strategic areas, so as to further increase the speed of the delivery service to foreign customers and improve the flow of purchases and sales abroad. In fact, Metalleghe buys its materials through a network of non-EU suppliers that guarantee a wide range of quality products of constant quality always available in the numerous warehouses, so that the company can respond promptly to even the most urgent and specific requests. At the current time, Metalleghe can already count on reference structures in Duisburg, Germany, in Chambery, France, and in Brescia, Italy.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

G.F: Six subsidiaries operate under the Metalleghe Group portfolio, including Metalleghe SPA, Eurometa, Esart Fonderie SRL, B.S.I. D.O.O, R-S Silicon, and Cuprocast SRL. Diversified operations offer clients a wide array of products and services, such as: Recarburizers (Graphite; Clacined Petroleum Coke; Electrical Calcined Anthracite; Gas Calcined Enthracite; Antrachite; Metallurgical Coke); Ferroalloys (FeSiMn; FeSi; FeMn HC, MC and LC; FeCr HC and LC; FeNb; FeNi); Briquettes (Silicon; Manganese; Silicon Carbide); Silicon Carbide (SiC 90% size 1/10-10/50-20/80 mm; SiC 97% size 1/10-10/50-20/80 mm); Silicon Metal.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

G.F: The global economic rebound has left Italian steel producers in an enviable position. The Italian industry had almost completely bounced back from the 2020 lockdown as of July last year, and prices have been soaring in recent months. The mid-term global outlook for the industry is positive – steel demand is set to reach 2.2 billion metric tons by 2026, up from 1.7 billion in 2020. Metalleghe is on the cusp of a new growth phase: the Group operates offices, warehouses and plants across Italy, Bosnia, France, Romania, and Germany, maintaining close proximity to customers to ensure the highest service standards. With a revenue of 500 million euros, Metalleghe is one of the most active players in the international market and the group is ready to build further on its successes.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

G.F: The most correct term to describe the historical moment that our sector, that is the one of raw materials, is definitely “volatility”. In fact, the ferroalloy sector is experiencing an obvious difficulty in the availability of raw materials, due to the sanctions imposed on Russia and the lack of supply of primary materials. But like all sectors, there are ups and downs and Metalleghe is a solid and strong group that guarantees its stakeholders the same service as always.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

G.F: More than innovative products, we could talk about novelties. One of the directions the industry is going in is undoubtedly the green economy, abandoning carbon and using recycled plastic. The suppliers are beginning to be more and more certified towards green.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2022?

G.F: We are already well established in Germany and other neighboring countries, but we are opening a distribution business in Turkey, and we are interested in Northern Africa and Europe. We are investing particularly heavily in Turkey, where business is booming, and as steel demand continues rising.
