INTERVIEW WITH MOVE SOLUTIONS

Move Solutions is a company that focuses on Smart Structural Health Monitoring technology. They leverage the potential of the Internet of Things to implement the smart infrastructures that a city needs to become a safer, more efficient, and more sustainable place.

The company’s aim is to simplify the whole monitoring process, providing a precise and complete SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) system that offers access to the health of the structure 24/7 and in real time.

Interview with Gabriele Corsi, CTO at Move Solutions.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Gabriele Corsi: We provide solutions for the remote monitoring of bridges, tunnels, railways, vertical structures, dams, historical buildings, and more, combining IoT (Internet of Things) and Structural Health Monitoring technologies.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

G.C: In 2022, we launched our Railway Tool, an all-in-one tool for remote and real-time railway monitoring with an online platform and sensors specifically designed for rail and track monitoring. We also released a few new products and updates, always striving to be the best company on the market. Every day we work hard to expand our solutions, aiming at designing new and innovative technology to meet and to anticipate our clients’ needs. We closed last year with many exciting new projects; we are now excited to start this new year with so many more to come.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

G.C: We offer wireless, smart, and remote monitoring solutions for dynamic, static, and geotechnical monitoring. However, we do not just sell structural health monitoring products: we work together with our clients to find the best solution for them, providing a unique and perfect system for every structural monitoring need.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

G.C: Most developed countries’ infrastructure was built after World War II and the Industrial Revolution. As we now know that their life span is way less than what was originally calculated, the problem of determining the structural safety level of civil infrastructures and buildings has raised growing concern all over the world. Population expansion and lifestyle changes have also exacerbated infrastructure deterioration such bridges, pipelines, and transportation networks, and infrastructure companies are realizing that only with continuous real-time inspection we can predict maintenance and repairs, reducing damage and accidents. These are the main reasons that are driving the structural health monitoring industry today.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

G.C: Most current infrastructure maintenance protocols are still based on reactive strategies; that means that interventions and repairs are performed when failure has already occurred. That is not only a more expensive option for the structure’s owner, but it can also be more dangerous for everyone. However, the market is changing and smart SHM systems are being introduced to promote a more proactive approach that, supported by continuous structural monitoring tools, aims at identifying damages before it is too late, better aligning to the widely talked about concept of smarter (and safer) cities.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

G.C: Our sensors are designed with the latest technology to be non-intrusive, wireless, and smart, enabling top performance and minimum maintenance: their installation is quick and easy, and in little time they start collecting and sending data. That alone is already innovative as the combination of IoT, and Structural Health Monitoring is only now being explored. In addition to that, it is also rare to find a system that offers cutting-edge technology for different types of monitoring (dynamic, static, and geotechnical), as most companies tend to focus on only one. Last, but not least, Move Solutions is specialized in designing unique-on-the-market products for dynamic monitoring that are contributing to making it one of the main companies in the SHM market.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2023?

G.C: Move Solutions is becoming accredited as a leading company for Smart Structural Health monitoring solutions in Europe, USA, and Canada, with an increasing number of infrastructure owners recognizing the disruptive potential of our technology. In 2023 we expect to continue to increase our market share as infrastructures safety and sustainability is becoming crucial, especially in the context of smart cities.
