INTERVIEW WITH ON LICHTTECHNIK GMBH

ON Lichttechnik is a lighting manufacturer providing solutions for the commercial and residential market. Based in Siegen, Germany ON is active all over the globe reaching as far as Australia. Still, Europe and especially Germany remain the brands strongest markets. ON is providing a number of high-end, flexible lighting solutions. They range from motorized architectural lighting for high ceilings and frequent lighting changes to smaller track systems and downlights for private and commercial projects. ON has its focus on delivering excellent light quality with a number of key features that make lighting flexible and adjustable.

Interview with Philipp Seidel, Sales Manager at ON Lichttechnik GmbH.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Philipp Seidel: The main markets are showroom, museum, gallery, hospitality, churches, offices and residential projects.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

P.S: ON´s newest motorized series is called RoboRadar. This Design Plus and RedDot Award winner, is a series of motorized downlights and ceiling mounted lights. Key features include tilt, turn, tunable white and dimming. With the fixture head moving out of the luminaire through the motorized control it is possible to easily reach most of the places in a room.

Another new series is called “Cubie”. This modular system delivery fantastic light quality for museum, gallery and retail applications. Through the on-board dimming function and the manual zoom it is possible to easily adjust the fixtures to get the best lighting effects. In this series ON works with a standard fixture and a number of optic modules, reaching from small to big angles, wallwashers and zoom models. Each optic module can be clicked onto the fixture offering great flexibility in return.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

P.S: ON is most known for its series of motorized luminaires, yet has a lot more to offer. The RoboSeries and RadarSeries are the brand´s motorized lighting solutions. Those include track lights, downlights and ceiling mounted lights. Key features are motorized turn, tilt, zoom, tunable white and dimming. The fixtures can easily be controlled by App, remote control or DMX.

ON is also quite active in the market of magnetic low voltage track systems with its RedDot winner “Maga”. This series offers a big range of spots with zoom and magnetic filters, wallwasher, linear lights and pendants. Further ON has a beam shaper in its portfolio. Every fixture can be dimmed individually if needed with many also offering the option of tunable white. ON further offers many of the fixtures from this system as downlights and ceiling mounted lights.

Finally, ON added the above-mentioned Cubie series just recently to the program. This modular system is a great solution for any retail, museum or gallery project with its flexibility and high-end light quality.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

P.S: We mainly work in the middle to high-end market. Our customers expect a quality solution and often look for that little extra. That is why we have added key features to many of our products to make them a little special. Obviously with the motorized luminaires we work in a niche market while our other solutions like the Maga system fit in many projects. What we realize often with the motorized fixtures is that it is still a quite uncommon technology in the lighting world, although solutions have been around for quite some years now. Still many customers are not familiar with those solutions or have never used them before. That is why we need to build up trust in ON as a brand but also into the technology of motorized lighting, as it can bring quite an advantage in projects that need those solutions.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

P.S: With one of the main market trends certainly being sustainable product solutions a big focus tends to also lay on lighting control solutions. Casambi, Philips Hue and others seem to become more and more popular. It seems like in the past many people were happy with standard lighting, on/off or manual dimming on a wall switch. Today a lot more people like to control their lighting from a portable device, some even if they are not in the room. This offers many new opportunities and is a quite apparent trend if we observe the technology trends around the globe.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

P.S: Really small luminaires from brands like the German Corporate Friends are nice and well designed. Also, Occhio has some great solutions, especially their gesture control of the luminaires is amazing. The company Licht Cube has recently developed another fantastic product. Slim in Motion is a pendant fixture made of 3 rings that can be moved up and down by motorized control and create different shapes. Finally, of course, we also work hard to be at the top of the markets we are active in and believe that the combination of excellent light quality delivered with the motorized control solutions can give the little extra in many projects.

E.E: What estimations do you have for the rest of 2022?

P.S: Nowadays it is really hard to make any predictions, even short term. Of course, increased cost of materials, energy and logistics create delays and stops in different projects. Also, long delivery times are an issue. We have actually changed our strategy already last year to increase our stock to serve short-term projects more quickly. In the midst of this we still expect this year to finish well with some exciting projects we are working on.
