INTERVIEW WITH RIEGE SOFTWARE

Riege Software is the creator of Scope, the leading cloud-based software for Air Freight, Ocean Freight and Customs. Designed to be the Digital Standard for digital logistics, Scope enables participants in the global supply chain to practice unrestricted collaboration with just one system.

Established in 1985 and ever since privately owned and managed, Riege has a continuous and sound understanding of the requirements of the logistics industry.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

RIEGE: Riege is one of the leading providers of cloud-based software for freight forwarding, transportation and logistics. With our software Scope, we help independent companies build networks that enable them to connect the global supply chain with local expertise. Founded in 1985, we are also an independent, owner-operated company serving over 570 customers with more than 6,000 users in 46 countries.

E.E: What’s the news for 2021 about new products?

RIEGE: We offer local support in seven branches worldwide and encourage our partners to extend their network to meet the international requirements of the demanding logistics market. With Scope, we do not offer an off-the-shelf, but continuously enhanced product. Our software is customer-proven, reliable and at the same time easy to use, with straightforward workflows.

We are continuously improving our web application Connect, which enables forwarders, agents and customers to track the current status of a shipment. All participants obtain reliable advice on their responsibilities, are enabled to fulfill milestones and add events. Customers can place bookings that are instantly available in Scope. All relevant documents are generated with the completion of a shipment and are available prior to its arrival. The clearly designed, user-friendly desktop of Connect can be customized according to a forwarder’s corporate design appearing to customers at the company’s own service.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

RIEGE: Designed as integrated forwarding software for air freight, ocean freight and customs, Scope has evolved into the Digital Standard for freight forwarding, which accelerates all processes and procedures.

Scope provides all the functions that actively support the user in order processing and thus make working life easier. From quotation to delivery. The electronic exchange of internal and external data eliminates unnecessary manual steps such as multiple data entries and time-consuming system changes. In addition, convincing top functions help to accelerate processes and reduce sources of error.

The top features in Scope include Airline Messaging, the complimentary web application Connect, which enables forwarders, agents, and customers to track the status of a shipment, an integrated flight schedule and the automatic creation of e-AWB’s wherever possible, just to name a few.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

RIEGE: Due to the ongoing pandemic, e-commerce has experienced a real boost. This was particularly noticeable in the movement of goods and the number of customs declarations since the beginning of 2020 and has once more demonstrated to the logistics industry what really matters to maintain seamless processes in logistics: cross-system cooperation between all parties involved in the global supply chain.

Riege partners with numerous providers of all kinds of services for the streamlined processing of shipments, participates actively in commissions, work groups and networks, and cooperates with institutions and academies to boost the industry and its procreation. Although digitization has been an issue in the logistics world for a long time, the willingness within the industry to share data and thus drive digitization forward is still stagnant. We are determined to bring the vision of unrestricted collaboration in the global supply chain to life.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

RIEGE: Apart from an increase in online trading, the changed requirements in terms of sustainability and data protection are currently hot topics on the market. Since carbon footprint has been point of discussion at EU level, almost every freight forwarder nowadays needs to pay attention to the CO2 emissions of its offered mode of transport, document these per customer request and, if necessary, offer transport alternatives with lower emissions.

Sustainability being one of our company values, we have a great interest in making logistics processes as environmentally friendly as possible. We offer our employees the possibility to work remotely from home, encourage the ones in the offices to pay attention to reduced energy consumption and try to use environmental-friendly alternatives whenever travelling for a business trip. However, our greatest achievement in terms of environmental protection was to drastically reduce paper usage by digitizing common processes in logistics. We managed to do that with Scope. But there is still a lot to be done.

Data theft on the other hand poses an underestimated threat, especially to Software-as-a-Service Providers and their customers, that we must stand up to. What makes these attacks so devastating is that the party effected loses all access to their data, bringing their whole operation to a halt. As a provider of a cloud-based transport-management-system with customers around the globe relying on a stable database, we have been observing the recent developments with concern. Scope is very well armed, but we are nevertheless continuously working on protecting our customers’ data in Scope, on the one hand by using operating systems, which can withstand such attacks and on the other hand by safeguarding the Riege data centers.
