INTERVIEW WITH TURRA

Since 1955 TURRA has been operating worldwide in the field of engineering and manufacturing of vertical injection presses, being the suitable solution for overmoulding of inserts with different sizes and specific shapes.

TURRA also offers the possibility to add automations for loading inserts and unloading finished parts and to install several injection units in order to overmould different thermoplastic, thermosetting and silicon materials even in different colours. The company is part of DM Industrial, a mix of extraordinary excellences brought together in order to create an Industrial Group based on specialization and high quality in terms of reliability, productivity and precision.

Interview with Andrea Musumeci, Sales Director at TURRA.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Andrea Musumeci: The application fields of TURRA presses are unlimited (automotive, electricity, medical, technical moulding, eyewear, cables, footwear) and our Technical Department is always available to develop and propose solutions for any Customer’s needs.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

A.M: The ERGON is our newest press line characterized by a compact, modern and functional design: thanks to its load-bearing structure the press is strong and rigid and the positioning of the piston group into the upper part of the press makes it possible to have the mould support 850 mm from the ground, allowing to have a user-friendly machine in a safety environment. The press traditional columns have been replaced by guides and slides on ball bearings and the inverter-controlled hydraulic pump contributes to the energy saving of the press. The long experience in multiple sectors allowed TURRA to obtain the full control and high repeatability of the injection process through an intuitive parameters management. Access to the injection unit also from the back of the press and the electrical cabinet and hydraulic unit integrated into the base make easy maintenance. A servo-controlled motor ensures accuracy and speed of sliding and rotary table that its available up to 2.000 mm diameter. The parameters of the press can be easily checked and viewed thanks to the new operator interface. All TURRA presses are also compliant with Industry 4.0 and can be integrated with automations through cartesian systems, SCARA or robots (special designs are also available on request).

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

A.M: Over the years, the company has developed and consolidated skills and know-how in different sectors, giving Customers the opportunity to choose between a traditional product (TRADITIONAL line) or an innovative and highly technological product (ERGON line) born in 2020. Both lines are available with no table (NT SERIES), with single/double sliding tables (ST SERIES), with rotary table (RT SERIES) and a wide range of clamping forces up to 200 tons.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

A.M: The injection molding machine business is very large with competing companies from all over the world, from China to Europe. However, 99% of the business is covered by horizontal presses and only a small niche of customers’ needs vertical presses, which is our core business. TURRA, since 1955, has specialized in this niche, has references all over the world and manages to be a market leader and reference. The market is quite consolidated even if, in recent years, we have been seeing a positive trend, especially in the electricity sector, which gives us hope for the future.

Andrea Musumeci, Sales Director at TURRA.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

A.M: The market is quite consolidated even if, in recent years, we have been seeing a positive trend, especially in the electricity sector, which gives us hope for the future.

The companies producing presses are all focusing on the GREEN aspect, of energy saving thanks to the adoption of an electric motor instead of the traditional hydraulic unit. This was possible in the presence of large numbers (horizontal presses) while in the niche of vertical presses a traditional system continues to be adopted. TURRA is however using solutions that allow greater efficiency, energy savings and a consequent improvement of the production process.

Another market trend is to automate the part loading and unloading process, which is possible when there are large batches. For this TURRA has a dedicated technical office to be able to customize its vertical presses.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

A.M: Undoubtedly our most innovative product is the ERGON vertical press, especially if integrated with a robotic system for loading / unloading pieces.

E.E: What estimations do you have for the rest of 2022?

A.M: 2022 was an important year for TURRA which, despite the world crisis linked to COVID and the war, consolidated a positive trend of growth of 30% of its turnover. For the rest of the year, we expect this positive trend to continue, supported by the fact that we already have orders to cover most of 2023. Precisely for this reason we are organizing to increase our production capacity in order to guarantee customers a rapid delivery, a very difficult and challenging activity in this historical period due to the lack of some necessary components, especially ones.
