INTERVIEW WITH WIRAN

WiRan develops hardware devices. Their specialty are solutions using wireless communication / radio frequencies (in particular LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M, but not only). The company provides a.o. solutions for the following industries: SPACE, INDUSTRY 4.0, SMART CITY, DEFENSE, railway, maritime.

There is one team but two brands.

WiRan is the main company, is a hardware and firmware design office.

SEZO, which is kind of a subsidiary, a manufacturer and distributor of IoT measuring devices, based on LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, LTE-M wireless communication technologies.

WiRan focuses on projects and non-standard solutions, while SEZO focuses on regular production and distribution.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

WIRAN:

1) RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SERVICES (R&DaaS). This means that we create individual hardware solutions tailored to the project:

  • whether it is a small number of atypical products,
  • or working and tested prototypes with full documentation so the customer can start serial production.

Our experience includes:

  • creating electronic parts,
  • fast prototyping,
  • feasibility studies.

2) a wide range of EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) tests and pre-certification (“WiRan ELAB”),

3) rental of the so-called clean room of ISO 7 class (“WiRan CleanRoom”),

4) we also produce for the SPACE INDUSTRY: antennas, diplexers, splitters, couplers for L, S, X bands for small and medium size satellites. Our space flight products have achieved TRL9 (“flight proven”) classification.

For SEZO:

We offer a range of IoT sensors:

  • measuring the atmospheric air,
    • measuring the air in buildings,
    • supporting the protection of infrastructure and movable property,
    • supporting the management of warehouse space,
    • tracking devices.

We have ready-made models, available from stock. We also develop new models based on our own ideas and customer needs – we are open to adapting them to the project, drawing on the knowledge and experience of the WiRan team.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

WIRAN: Currently we look forward to develop next air particle sensing in order to allow our customers a broader scope of air quality monitoring. In days of energy sources difficulties provision of energy and heat might be achieved at the expense of air quality due to returning to “dirty” sources of energy like fossil fuels. We hope to allow an easy and reliable measurement process as our devices are tested and calibrated in comparison to the official measurement stations of the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.

Another direction to which we plan to develop our solutions are radar technologies that can be applied to liquid level measurement. This way we expect to enter into the utilities business like rainwater management or waste management.

Finally, among many civil use solutions we also developed a sensor for the defence business – SEZO DS reversing sensor. This sensor allows to detect obstacles in the rear of an wheeled armored personnel carrier, keeping high resilience and durability standards as for the complete vehicle. Thanks to this experience we are able to develop further variations for both: defence business as well as civilian customers whose aim is to protect the vehicle perimeter.

Space flight products of WiRan are unique in terms of incredibly low lead times, which was one of driving factors during the design. We typically stock them, which means we may provide them off the shelf or after single days of additional testing.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

WIRAN: WiRan focuses on tailored made devices and services, so this question can be answered by presenting SEZO assortment. SEZO IoT sensors flag ships are related to air quality measurement, both indoor and outdoor. So, monitoring environmental conditions as well as e.g. air conditions in classes or offices are available with great accuracy of measurement.

Besides that, we also provide solutions that can be applied to:

  • warehouse / facility and portables protection and maintenance,
  • storage and production,
  • tracking.

One interesting product segment of WiRan are the “space” components: we provide satellite components which are responsible for communication: antennas, splitters, diplexers etc. Among those we already have couple that reached TRL9, that is flight proven status. It is a prestigious segment of what we do and proof that our team is able to create reliable solutions.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

WIRAN: The IoT market is constantly growing despite persistent turbulences with supply chains of components that started during COVID-19. For SEZO it is a matter of expanding its offer and intensifying marketing activity and customer relations as in many of the areas we cover the economic situation allows growth.

We are focusing currently on the Polish market as well as foreign markets within the EU.

E.E: What can you tell us about market trends?

WIRAN: Not much. New Space is not the driving factor is space probably any more, it’s the constellation business.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

WIRAN: The most innovative solutions that we as a team develop are included in projects of WiRan company:

  • air quality sensors for very low temperatures,
  • recorders for entertainment industries,
  • wirelessly communicating devices for protection of underground teletech infrastructure.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2023?

WIRAN: 2023 for WiRan is a year of reorganization where we improve our structure and procedures in order to reflect the current and future size and dynamics of company development. Rapid growth in previous years must now be backed by the right processes and software tools.

From the sales point of view, we expect a significant growth in SEZO sales as it products matured enough to be distributed beyond Polish borders and CEE region.
