INTERVIEW WITH BIO-UV

BIO-UV Group is a specialist in chemical-free water and surface treatment solutions. French-based and founded in 2000, BIO-UV Group designs, manufactures and markets ultraviolet, Ozone, salt electrolysis and AOP (advanced oxidation process) disinfection systems.

With a consolidated turnover of 44,3M € in 2021, 150+ employees and over 50% of sales being achieved abroad, BIO-UV Group is a global player with a worldwide presence through a wide distribution network. Since 2018, BIO-UV Group is listed on Euronext Growth, Paris Stock exchange.

Thanks to its expertise in water treatment, BIO-UV Group has expanded its brand portfolio to include:

BIO-UV: The principle is simple; the sun emits invisible light – ultraviolet light. At the wavelength 254nm, the UV-C penetrates the heart of the DNA and eradicates micro-organism (virus, bacteria, algae, yeasts, mould, including Legionella, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Toxoplasma that are hardly destroyed by ozone and not at all by chlorine at standard doses), breaking up cell metabolism until they are completely   destroyed. Thus, all germs are deactivated and cannot reproduce. Inspired by nature, this natural phenomenon is reproduced inside the BIO-UV Group’s reactors using powerful lamps, a leading-edge technology, producing UV-C rays.

BIO-SEA: turnkey ballast water treatment system for ship tanks combining mechanical filtration and UV-C disinfection.

triogen® (acquisition in 2019 from Suez): Ozone, UV and advanced oxidation disinfection technology for the industry, aquaculture and public pools.

Akeron (acquisition in 2021): ranges of systems for treating, regulating and heating swimming pool water on the residential market using Salt electrolysis.

BIO-SCAN: a complete range of UV -C based surface disinfection systems.

Interview with Isabelle SOST, Head of marketing and Communications.

Easy Engineering: What are the main areas of activity of the company?

Isabelle SOST: Targeting a wide range of applications, BIO-UV Group addresses the following market verticals: residential pools and spas, commercial pools and spas, water parks, aquariums, ocean parks and zoos, aquaculture, fish farming, recreational ponds, water features, wastewater management and reuse, as well as drinking water, industrial process water and ballast water in the maritime.

E.E: What’s the news about new products?

I.S: BIO-UV Group latest innovation, triogen® O3 Flex-10, is a compact, integrated ozone solution designed for water disinfection and oxidation for a wide variety of industrial applications. The system incorporates the triogen® oxygen concentrator, triogen® TOGC2 Ozone generator, booster pump, and injection assembly capable of producing and delivering a variable Ozone output.

E.E: What are the ranges of products?

I.S: UV, Ozone and salt electrolysis water treatment systems for residential pools and spas, with Chemical-free solutions designed to reduce environmental footprint and increase bathing comfort while taking care of the health of bathers.

BIO-UV Group has also developed a range of products dedicated to dichlorination of public or collective swimming pools and spas, Chlorine being still a mandatory primary disinfectant in many countries. Water must be renewed frequently and therefore be treated at the outlet in order to avoid any discharge containing chlorine. Once dechlorinated with UV, the water can then be reused, for irrigation as an example or be re-injected into the pool, if the conditions and regulations allow.

UV dichlorination has also become extremely popular processes for reducing the concentration of chloramines in public or semi commercial swimming pool water to remove chloramines side effects, causing skin and eye irritations as well as respiratory infections.

Innovative solutions to respect the fauna and flora for aquaculture, fish farming, ponds and aquariums. BIO-UV Group has developed a range of UV reactors as well as Ozone generator to resist salt water and/or corrosive water and meet the most stringent safety requirements.

A range of systems to treat wastewater and reuse it in the agricultural or industrial fields. In water treatment, UV and Ozone technologies are capable of disinfection, dichlorination, deozonation, and the removal of organic and inorganic contaminants from water, enabling its reuse and reducing freshwater consumption and use of traditional chemicals.

BIO-SEA by BIO-UV range is a complete line of ship ballast water treatment that combines mechanical filtration and UV-C disinfection without any chemical treatment to neutralize invasive species in the oceans. Ballast Water Treatment minimizes the transfer of non-indigenous harmful aquatic organisms and pathogens from one area to another. Our 3 systems can treat flow rates ranging from 10 to 2100 m3/hour and are suitable for small cargo, OSV, PSV, Yachts, bulk carriers, cruise passenger ships…

A BIO-SCAN range capable of eradicating and inactivating all viruses and bacteria from treated surfaces and objects within seconds.

E.E: At what stage is the market where you are currently active?

I.S: We are acting on a highly active market with lots of global players. The threat on water shortage and the need to reduce or optimize water consumption is driving R&D towards more sustainable solutions.

With over 20 years of expertise, BIO-UV Group is one of the key European players in the recreational market for water disinfection using chemical-free systems.

What can you tell us about market trends? Market trends in the residential pools and spas market is to move away from chlorine and to adopt chemical free solutions inspired by nature like UV and Ozone. Chlorine-related technologies are still expected to dominate the market but UV and Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) disinfection will gain widespread attention due to flexibility in operation, small footprint, and extreme versatility.

With regards to Ballast water treatment the market is driven by IMO convention and vessels will have to be equipped by September 2024 at the latest.

E.E: What are the most innovative products marketed?

I.S: O’Clear system which combines salt electrolysis and ultraviolet technologies is an innovative concept of water disinfection for private pools and spas. In 2021, BIO-UV Group has launched this unique water treatment system that guarantees a perfectly disinfected pool without the addition of chemicals.

E.E: What estimations do you have for 2022?I.S: Since we are a listed company on the Paris stock exchange, we cannot communicate figures, but we expect steady growth.
